'North of Watford Gap' author's sales success!
SilverWood author John Brown sold his entire first print run of North of Watford Gap even before publication, and we've ordered a further 250 copies to keep up with the orders that are flooding in!
John worked hard to promote North of Watford Gap and get an exciting advance 'buzz' going. His efforts were so successful that he has copies of his laconic new travel guide in over 180 branches of Waterstone's across the UK.
North of Watford Gap is the long awaited new travel book from John Brown (following his acclaimed Return to Oz?). The new book explodes the myths held by many about the North. From the lush plains of Cheshire to the Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland, from Hadrian's Wall to Cumbria, Lancashire and Merseyside – the author skillfully picks away at the widely-held belief that all people 'North of Watford Gap' live in terraced houses, keep whippets and pigeons, and wear flat caps and clogs.
John admits that marketing his book directly to bookshops was sometimes hard work, "But the positive responses I received were a real boost. Bolton ordered 12 copies, Manchester Central asked for 15, and the Trafford Centre were keen to get their hands on 10 copies. Waterstone's in Preston were extremely helpful - they loved the sound of the book and immediately wanted to book me for a speaking engagement. Reactions like that make it all worthwhile!"
