Born at 1 Fairview Cottages, Terry John Clark grew up in the home where his family had resided since 1908. It was his happy upbringing in this town, which holds so many fond memories, that prompted him to research and write this history of Bracknell, a town within the Great Windsor Forest.
Spanning Bracknell’s growth from a population of just a few hundred in the Middle Ages, Terry’s research documents Royal visits to Easthampstead Park, local heroes who gave their lives during the First or Second World Wars, and the
development of the modern town.
From pre-Roman settlement to the present day, Bracknell is a small town with a rich history...
Terry John Clark was born at number one Fairview Cottages, Bracknell. His family had resided in this house since 1908 when his great grandfather Bert Bickmore relocated from Slough.
Settled in Bracknell, Bert became the local blacksmith and his daughter Muld married a local man, Albert Earnest Sidney Clark, whom she’d known from school. Albert and Muld were married in December 1929 and in May 1930 their son Bernard Sidney Thomas Clark was born.
Bernard was bought up in the same cottage as his mother and attended Priestwood School as his parents had. When Bert died in 1950 Bernard bought forward his plans to marry Dorothy May Hobley and they too remained at the cottage. Terry was born into the family on the cold, frosty morning of 6 January 1953 and this was followed by the birth of his brother on 29 July 1957.
Terry had a happy upbringing in that cottage where he lived until 1967 when his mother and father bought a house in Wokingham. After 47 years Terry remains in this home yet his fond memories of Fairview Cottages prompted him to research and write this history of Bracknell town.
