Events: Building the Readership for Your Books

Events are a great way to spread the word about your book. However, it can take a lot of work to market events and get people to attend. We reviewed the key elements to think about if you’re planning events to promote and sell your books and shared our tips for each one!

In Author News:

• Eve Bonham held a signing of her book, Dear Magpiesat Waterstones in Dorchester. The book has been getting a lot of publicity and coverage, such as a feature in the Dorset Echo and an interview with the author on TalkRadio. Eve has been working with Elly Donovan PR to achieve this great coverage.

• Acting Able Seaman: Hostilities Only, the extraordinary story of one young man’s life at sea, was published on 16 December, and the author F A Beedie held a launch at his home on publication day, with the mayor in attendance.

• Sharon King, creator of Matrix Birth Reimprinting and author of Heal Your Birth, Heal Your Life, is currently teaching workshops in Chile and promoting her book there. This autumn, Sharon launched the Romanian translation of her book, hot on the heels of recent publications in Bulgaria, Germany and South Korea, with all foreign rights contracts negotiated by Helen Hart of SilverWood Books.

• J H Yorvik’s novel Uneasy Sleepers, published by SilverWood in 2017, has earned the author a paid flight to Frankfurt to address the Heiligenberg Forces in February 2020: good luck J H! Read more about the book here.

• Richard Bland, author of AB Gets His Wings, has been working with Realise Charity to donate over 200 books in their Christmas Community Appeal. Richard and the Christmas Community Gift Appeal aim to support communities and improve literacy with Realise. Read more here, or buy the book here.

• Vix J Cooper, author of Crazy Pets and Secrets Revealed, loves being able to give to charity through her books. She donated 10% of her book sales from her November events to Child Bereavement UK. 

Vix says "Not only can we authors help raise funds for such charities, I think it lets more people know where to get the type of support they need." She has also got a new title in the works: watch this space!
