Thinking of delaying your publication date...?

Published: 20 Apr 2020

Due to the coronavirus situation, we’ve had several authors ask us recently about upcoming launches and events in light of social distancing guidelines.

Here’s our current thinking:

At the moment, we can’t see any obvious advantage of delaying publication. The coming weeks present a good opportunity to release a book, as many readers are at home with more time on their hands, and book sales have risen dramatically since mid-March. When the lockdown is lifted, people are likely to have less free time in general and therefore could be less inclined to read because they’ll be busy getting work and life back on track.

By going ahead with book publication and launch as planned, you can encourage reviews and endorsements, to help kickstart publicity and interest in advance of doing live events and signings later in the year. Reviews are increasingly important as readers consider them a vital part of their book-buying decisions. The aim is to get as many as possible on the day of publication (ideally around twelve 4 or 5 star reviews on the same day to help rankings), following that with reviews being posted through the first week of publication, and then keeping that up with reviews being posted as regularly as possible through the following weeks.

Additionally, as a lot of people have emptier schedules at the moment, it could be a good opportunity to catch these readers, who might be spending more time online and/or reading books than usual. Use this captive audience to your advantage and promote yourself on social media and spread the word about your new book.

Now may also be the perfect time to arrange a virtual book/blog tour to gain reviews, profile, and some publicity ahead of a launch event. Read our Learning Zone article by clicking this link about Blog Tours. Most blog tours are booked two months or more in advance, so consider contacting organisers sooner rather than later.

We’ve also got some great tips on how to use social media, attract more readers and drive book sales in another of our Learning Zone articles about Facebook Advertising.
