Book Writing Club - August

About this event

In this writing masterclass, scriptwriter and creative writing tutor Shaun McCarthy will explore how to write strong dialogue. Dialogue underpins the narrative of a book. It gives a unique voice to each character, enabling readers to get to know them in subtle ways.

Shaun McCarthy is a stage and radio dramatist. He has had 13 stage plays professionally produced and radio plays and drama series on BBC R4. He runs Hooligan Theatre Productions, which develops his new stage productions. Current projects include shooting a show reel for 'Julie and Johnny’ his radical adaptation of Strindberg’s 'Miss Julie’ reset to Bristol 1963; and a site specific music theatre production in a castello in Campania, Italy. He teaches a wide range of creative writing courses for Oxford University, and guest lectures at universities in the UK and Europe.

In this masterclass our guest speaker Shaun McCarthy will explore:

  1. Introduction: whether you're writing for stage and screen (script and screenplay) or page (prose fiction) dialogue is not conversation placed in dramatic settings!
  2. How effective dialogue works to: advance the story, reveal character, motivation and deliver subtext.
  3. Understanding your characters in order to create compelling voices.
  4. How to create convincing differentiation between voices.
  5. Conclusion: a test to ensure consistent voices and justified changes in how a character speaks.
SilverWood Books Publishing Director Helen Hart and host Debra Penrice will also be available on the session to answer your questions about publishing and help you overcome any challenges in your writing. And we have a members group to stay in touch between events and a regular members Zoom call too - all included in the price of your ticket. Book now to join us!
