'There are gentleness, determination and intelligence in Elizabeth Hopkinson’s
Asexual Tales. There are also imagination and diversity. There are originality and symbolism.
With the first tale, Hopkinson created an origin myth for the colour purple in the asexual flag. Each tale is part reflection on the reality of the world and part reconnecting with nature. Each reminds us of how personal and precious identity is, and how vulnerable we are, and yet so strong.
Like Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm and some more before her, Hopkinson is not afraid of rewriting tales with her understanding of them. Stories that have been told as poems, fables and lais, in many parts of the world.
What makes More Asexual Fairy Tales a vital retelling is a rediscovered need for innocence and acknowledgement. We all exist, regardless of sexuality or gender, and we are worthy' –
