Both The Scale of Midnight and Ellipsis, although separate novellas, are interlinked by the themes of death, absence and the haunting of memory.

In the former, a father’s daughter dies in the Indonesian tsunami of Boxing Day 2004; the consequences of which unleash a series of tragic events. The narrative is constructed in cinematic-style flashbacks in this compelling and disturbing story.

The latter novella is terse, yet tender and haunting in its brevity. This book might be seen as a message from that fragile interface between life and death. Those gaps, those absences, those ghosts, those silences – they are all mirrored here. The reader is invited to peep into those key moments of the lives concerned.

RICHARD LEIGH HARRIS was born in Bristol in 1956. He is a professional musician, lecturer, composer, pianist and writer. He studied at the Birmingham School of Music (Royal Birmingham Conservatoire) and Reading University where he obtained his Master of Music degree.

As a writer, Richard has contributed articles and reviews to the following journals: Avant, Classical Music, Harpsichord & Fortepiano, International Piano, Music Teacher, Musical Opinion Quarterly, The B. S. Johnson Journal, The Musical Times and Tempo.

Richard was based in Oxford for nearly thirty years, before moving back to Bristol in 2008 where he married in 2010. He is also a qualified reflexologist.

His previous two books, the memoir The Days of Our Vanity and the miscellany My Bermuda Books were both published by SilverWood Books in 2012 and 2017, respectively.

He is a member of the British Haiku Society.
