The Secret Wave is an endearing fantasy with a relatable storyline. It has two levels – a fun fantasy, and a deeper message, communicating the importance of getting to know a person’s heart instead of judging them on what you’ve been told. Covering issues such as secrecy and peer pressure, it can be used to encourage discussions between adults and children.
Debbie Joy Brookes was born in Somerset in 1963, overlooking the Severn Estuary. Spending all childhood holidays camping by the coast, a love of the seaside has continued her whole life.
She worked as an Occupational Therapist in Bristol, and then later as an illustrator after having her first of three daughters.
After having her youngest daughter, Debbie began to specialise in child and pet portraits. Debbie’s husband of almost thirty years encouraged her to publish The Secret Wave after talking about doing so for almost fifteen years.
